This collection contains Wilbur D. Peat's research notes and the results of a survey conducted by the Indiana Historical Bureau concerning Indiana houses built prior to 1860. Also included are the edited transcripts and the records of the Indiana Historical Society concerning the publication of the book based on these research materials; an index to Indiana Architects from 1855 to 1885; and photographs of the houses included in the survey.

In 1956 the Indiana Historical Bureau conducted a survey of houses built in Indiana prior to 1860. Wilbur D. Peat was asked to use the survey results as a basis for a book on Indiana architecture. At the time he was director of the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis and had published other works concerning art and architecture in Indiana. Wilbur D.
